What is SIGGRAPH Dailies?
Whereas most SIGGRAPH content is focused on new techniques for creating images, SIGGRAPH Dailies! is focused on the imagery itself and the stories of the artists who created it.
The program debuted at SIGGRAPH 2010 in Los Angeles, to rave reviews. Here is an excerpt from the review in Animation World Network:
"Three cheers for the new SIGGRAPH Dailies. The premise sounds so simple: give artists, animators and computer graphics professionals an opportunity to showcase their own work, usually part of a larger project. They have 90 seconds.
"One after another, rapid fire, the presenters showed their clips while briefly describing the scope of their work. Some were unintelligible, some were hilarious. But they all resonated with one thing: they shone a light, ever so briefly, on the mostly anonymous and unappreciated work done by any one of the thousands of names that scroll by at warp speed at the end of a feature film. Or the work done by grad students locked in the basement of some dark and distant research lab."
SIGGRAPH Dailies Wants You!
SIGGRAPH 2012 invites you to submit a short (60-90 seconds) sequence showing recent work. It could be professional, personal, student work, or anything. The work might be:
- For film: A turnaround of a model or shader
- For film: A final animation, FX, or lighting shot
- For games: A game character or level design
- For games: A killer cinematic
- For visualization: Elucidating a biological or physical process
- For visualization: Turning numerical data into visuals
But anything is welcome, as long as it's great. The only criteria are mind-blowing excellence and interesting backstory:
Excellence
We want the best thing you've done all year. Never mind whether it has the latest, greatest algorithm or will redefine techniques for future work. Ask only: will it blow your peers away?
Backstory
Did you re-tailor the wedding dress 51 times? Did you pull three consecutive all-nighters with a production assistant hovering over you? Did you throw out the design packet and do what you thought was best?
SIGGRAPH Dailies! is a presentation format. You will need to get on stage for approximately two minutes and talk about your work. So pick the best thing you've done all year, and submit!

Log in to the SIGGRAPH Information System, select "Begin a New Submission", and then select "create" for the SIGGRAPH Dailies! submission form. You will be asked for:
- Basic information about your submission (page 1)
- Permissions (page 2)
- A presentation format (page 3). To submit to SIGGRAPH Dailies!, please select SIGGRAPH Dailies! as your presentation format.
You will then be taken to the forms specific to this presentation format. Please see below for more information about required information and materials for this presentation format.
Your submission must include the following materials and information:
- Basic submission information, including speaker names, affiliations, and contact information, as well as title of your work, and a single-sentence summary (50 words or fewer).
- Statement of permissions to use the submitted materials.
- Submission categories and keywords to help ensure your submission is reviewed and juried appropriately.
- One "representative image" suitable for use in the conference web site and promotional materials. See Representative Image Guidelines.
- Your presentation backstory, submitted as a PDF. This is what you will read onstage. It is what we’ll read for jurying.
- A low-res version (for convenience in jurying) of your presentation video, which must be in this format: QuickTime, H264 encoded, 640 x 360p, up to 90 seconds, no sound. Upon acceptance you will need to submit a hi-res version (1280 x 720p).
Non-native English speakers may use the English Review Service to help improve the text of submissions. Please note that this process takes time, so plan far ahead.
All submitters must complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement (formerly the Acceptance Agreement) before the submission deadline. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted.
Educator’s Resources Submission option. Those submitting content to a SIGGRAPH conference have the option of donating materials of educational value to ACM SIGGRAPH online resources for the benefit of the education community. Learn more

Jurors are looking for craft and excellence in computer graphics, and an interesting backstory (an impossible deadline, a late-night inspiration, an artistic argument, an unexpected romance, etc.)
You will be notified of acceptance or rejection of your submission in mid-June 2012.
If accepted, you will be able to update your basic submission information and any final materials so that they can be included in the conference schedule and web site. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance.
Additionally, you will need to upload a final presentation video by mid-June deadline. The format must be QuickTime, H264 encoded, 1280 x 720p, up to 90 seconds, no sound.
Note: this is a presentation format, so you must attend to present. Registration and travel costs are at your own expense, except for the contributor of record, who will receive recognition as specified in the SIGGRAPH 2012 Recognition Policy.

I don't get it. What is this anyway?

I lit a great shot on the movie "Killer Zombies from Mars", but it's only three seconds long. How can I get that to 90 seconds?
You could show a progression of versions as you add more and more lights, or show a breakdown of various AOVs and how you adjusted the comp, or you could just loop the shot 20-30 times. It's up to you.
Can I submit a still image or a series of stills?
Yes, if it is computer generated and can hold the audience's interest while you tell the story behind it.
I don't want to get on stage. Or, I'm not sure I can make it. Can I just record my story as a voice-over?
Sorry, we're looking for people to get on stage and present the information themselves. We'll simply skip over no-shows during the presentation.
