Showcasing Advancements in Real-Time Graphics
Real-Time Live! presents demonstrations of real-time graphics from Epic, LucasArts, Naughty Dog, and Square-Enix, among others. Pulling from a range of industries, the 90-minute show combines an eclectic and visually stimulating array of projects.
Real-Time Live! presents the most prominent demonstrations and advances in real-time graphics over the last 12 months. Pulling from a range of industries, the show combines an eclectic and visually stimulating array of projects including audio, controller, and gesture-based inputs to a variety of techniques for abstract, physically based, and photorealistic rendering solutions.
“As the momentum behind real-time photorealism accelerates, Real-Time Live! 2012 presents multiple projects pushing human character performance alongside physically based lighting and shading techniques,” said Jason RM Smith, Real-Time Live! Director and Chair from LucasArts. “The show retains a strong breadth of diversity with breakdowns of an audio-driven procedural graphics engine, an augmented reality gesture-based control solution, proprietary and commercial rendering engines, and a number of unreleased games titles.”

Unreal Engine 4 Elemental
Paul Oliver, Epic Games, Inc.
Developed by Epic Games, Elemental is the first real-time demonstration showcasing its next-generation Unreal Engine 4 technology. The demo presents rendering features utilizing DirectX 11 hardware. It takes per-pixel deferred shading to the next level: energy-conserving specular highlights from area lights and shadowed reflections from emissive materials creating area lights with shadowing, dynamic global illumination that affects both opaque and translucent materials, glossy surfaces that feature accurate reflections, subsurface scattering, and deferred decals. All lighting is complemented by the new GPU-accelerated particle simulation and the new post-processing pipeline.
Star Wars 1313

Take control of a lethal bounty hunter in a never-before-seen dark and mature world. Star Wars 1313 introduces an integrated development approach by bringing together great artists across the Lucasfilm organization, including LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm Animation Ltd. and Skywalker Sound. The Coruscant underworld is brought to life through a combination of audio, performance capture, asset production, VFX and post-processing techniques from film, seamlessly blended with explosive game-play and real-time rendering performance.
Uncharted 3 Visual Effects
Mohammed Ikram, Naughty Dog
For Uncharted 3, Naughty Dog tackled the challenge of rendering multiple environmental effects, such as fire, water, and sand in the game set pieces. The biggest challenge was delivering high-quality visual effects in real time while keeping the strict cinematographic and artistic style of the game.
Luminous Studio Tech Demo

This technical demonstration reveals some of the graphics capabilities of the next-generation Luminous Game Engine: Tessellation, photo-realistic rendering, real-time global illumination, reflection, refraction, particle systems, advanced shading of hair and skin, and much more.

Presenter Scott Keating from SideEffects Software said: “When creating any animation or visual effect, it is always necessary to hold a vision of the final product in your mind. I had been tasked with creating a volcanic ash plume and rendering the final result in a beautiful way. While working on this project, which was to demonstrate the capabilities of our new smoke simulation tools, I found myself in a constant struggle between my artistic goals (a beautiful image), the technology (our new smoke solver), and reality (it needed to look and behave realistically). This struggle, I've found, is what makes being a computer artist so compelling, and why I was so pleased with the final result of this project.”

Distinguished experts in the field share their work during the ACM SIGGRAPH Award Talks.
ACM SIGGRAPH is honored to announce its 2012 award recipients:
- Greg Turk, Computer Graphics Achievement Award;
- Karen Liu, Significant New Researcher;
- Jean-Pierre Hébert, Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art; and
- David Kasik, Outstanding Service Award.
The awards will be presented during the SIGGRAPH 2012 keynote session on 6 August. The awardees also will give their individual talks that day from 2 – 3:30 pm in room 408B. Learn more about the award recipients.
